Quote of the Day Scripts for Blogs

Monday, April 30, 2007

I enjoy reading good quotes. They can succinctly sum up life and human nature giving reflection for thought or a good laugh.

Here are some options which allow you to include a daily quote on your blog.

Brainy quote provides a cut and paste script for 5 different daily quote types:

Brainy quotes also provides the code to include RSS feeds of each of these quote types.

Todays-Woman famous woman's quote of the day.

A wordpress quote plug-in can be found here Adding Quotes As Customizable Content

Quogr - is a free tool, for blogs using their own server, that allows you to display random quotes and images of your choice on your site. This tool creates a database of your favorite quotes and images and generates an html tag to embed on your website. They call this a quog!

Try to find a quote of the day that suits the mood or topic of your blog.

You may even decide a different type of quote more suitable - ie stock quotes. Yahoo provides a service that creates a customisable script for you to include on your site showing stock quotes charts and news.

Put your Blog on the Map/Map on the Blog

Saturday, April 28, 2007

I am a devotee of online mapping sites such as Google Earth - the wanderer in me is not quite dead yet! When I came across the Frappr map which is now displaying in the footer of this page, I was keen to try it out.

Please feel free to add yourself to this map by the clicking join button. If you are not a member of Frappr you will be prompted to sign up. If you have a blog you are welcome to type in its url in the detail section; which appears after you click the join button.

  • Frappr - view it in action in the footer of this page.

There are other mapping tools that can be used in blogs.(Thank goodness for auto form filling as I register with a with a huge amount of sites. ).

Here are the links:

All of these maps are simple to set up - just type in your blog details and the code will be created for you to insert into your template.

Blaugh

Saturday, April 21, 2007

Blaugh calls itself the (Un)official comic of the blogosphere. As an individual's humor varies I will leave it to you to check out and decide if you would like to include it in your blog.

It is very simple to add by copying the coding given on the site although you will likely need to alter the size to suit its location on your blog. For a sidebar, for example, you may want it to be width="210" height="116. Your blog editor will probably let you select the image, and hold the shift key (to keep the image in the correct proportions) while dragging the image to the size you choose.

Betiquette

Friday, April 20, 2007

Betiquette ( Blog Etiquette)

Well, the word Netiquette is accepted (I know because my spell checker does not decorate it with a wavy red line) so why not Betiquette??

I can summarize my own "Betiquette" by saying "be a considerate and honest blogger":

• Respect your reader
• Respect other bloggers
• Don't neglect the other sort of people (those who live in your house, those you work with, those that call you a relation, friend etc)

Particular areas:

I am sure others could add many more points to this list so please feel free add a comment to this post or email me; letting me know if you think I have missed anything out. I am writing this on the fly so it is likely that I have. Many of these points are not only relevant to behaviour but will also pay dividends in attracting and maintaining readers.

Your readers:
  • Respond to what you readers seem to find the most interesting by creating more posts of a similar nature or topic. This does not mean you have to neglect other areas especially if you are trying to widen or increase your blog audience but you need to be mindful of what is of interest.
  • Try to develop respect even if you are posting topics or opinions your readers may disagree with.
  • Try to create a rapport with your readers by bringing your own personality to bear in your posts.
  • Respond to comments if a question is posed or just to say thank you. (there are some comments you most definitely would not to say thank you for! Then again you may not even allow them to be shown.)
  • Try to be as helpful as possible by responding to questions or requests.
  • Take care with your template that it is not too slow to load, not full of glaring graphics, backgrounds and colors and that text stands out well from its background. You may like it yourself but your audience may not find it easily readable.
  • Ensure it is easy to navigate.
  • Have clear categories.
  • If you need to approve comments, ensure that you do so speedily.
  • Write at a level that your readers can clearly understand and do not use jargon, colloquialisms or slang if you think your desired audience may not understand it. (Without a brussel no one 'll have a scooby and won't come back to take another butcher's)

Other bloggers:
  • If you refer to other blogs or to posts that others have created, always create a link back to the post or blog.
  • Do not just repeat the post verbatim but add your own comments and explanations. I believe it is ok to repeat a phrase or sentence as long as this is clearly credited back to its writer e.g. a clever comment that you are praising them for.
  • Be sure that the other blogger will appreciate comments. Some personal sites with select readers may not. If you are unsure contact them and ask.
  • If you are writing about some external topic e.g. a new blog tool, online application etc, do your own research: do not just mimic that of the blogger who pointed you in that direction.
  • Do not leave comments on other blogs merely to get link backs but because the post is comment worthy.
  • Do not be rude or show anger in your comments and take care with your language (my language is always 'appropriate' anyway of course, at least when no one is listening or occasionally if there are no children around and I stub a toe, break a favorite ornament etc).
  • If you are part of a community or network associated with your blogging behave as if you are not just there to gain readers. Contribute.
I have been reading so many posts about monetization, SEO and optimization lately and working on gaining readers here, I felt the need to write something that makes me feel less self-interested. (Blogging can be a little egotistic)

Online Presentation Tools Useful for Bloggers

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

I talked about Spresent in my last post. Although I think this application seems to be the most useful, easily used and versatile presentation creation tool, there are others which may suit the differing needs of bloggers. Here are some examples:

Zoho Show
Import your existing presentations (.ppt, .pps, .odp, .sxi), and embed them in your blog or web site.

Empressor

  • Embed video, audio, pictures and Flash
  • Create dynamic charts and graphs

  • Link your favorite photos and video

ThinkFree

  • Online creation of documents, spreadsheets and presentations which can then be incorporated into Wordpress. More blogging systems to come. If you do not use Wordpress you can still create the documents and simply include a link in your blog.
  • Easily incorporate MS Office created documents, spreadsheets and presentations into your blog. Upload your Office documents and Thumbstacks creates the code needed to incorporate them into your blog.

  • Use documents from the Thumbstacks Document Exhange or share your own.

  • Free 1gb storage

See some examples here

Tools to create online presentations that you can link to from your blog.

Thumbstacks

Make presentations in your web browser. Share your presentations by including a link in your blog. Want to see an example?

Ajax13 a suite of online tools allowing you to create documents, presentations, spreadsheets and sketches that you can link to from your blog. Works with Firefox.
  • Ajax Presents - a web-based presentation editor that lets you read, edit and save Microsoft Power Point files (.ppt) as well as Open Standard Presentation files
  • Ajax Write - a web-based word processor that can read and write Microsoft Word and other standard document formats.

  • AjaxXLS - open any .xls file within your Firefox browser. Compatibility with Microsoft Excel and OpenOffice. Edit online.

  • AjaxSketch - a web-based drawing tool that allows you to create diagrams, flow charts, and be creative with free hand drawing.

  • AjaxTunes - a web-based music player that lets you play high-quality streaming music straight from the Internet on any computer. You can allow your own website visitors to play single songs or even lists of songs hosted on your website.
Slideaway - create powerpoint slide shows using the slideaway plug in and publish them on your site.

Once I have had a play with these more I will include some examples and more reviews.

For now listen to one of the songs from the AjaxTunes demo library (if you have Firefox)

As with all the tools I post about, if you know of any other examples please let me know.

Spresent - an 'Sgift' to bloggers

Spresent

Apologies for the very poor pun in the title.

I have a long list of things to post about but I was so impressed by this online application that I could not wait to share it with you. Spresent allows you to create flash based web based presentations and slide-shows which can be then be published to a website or blog. It could be considered a web based Powerpoint - a currently missing feature from Google Docs.

You can create presentations quickly and easily.

Features:

  • Create presentations and slide shows.
  • Embed your presentation into a blog or existing web page or create a new html page.
  • Use one of the pre-designed templates offered or create your own layout.
  • Incorporate images, backgrounds, animated images and backgrounds, clip art and shapes from Spresent's extensive library
  • Embed Flickr photos and YouTube videos.
  • Build tables and animated tables
  • Produce charts and animated charts.
  • Create your own masterpieces and draw freehand or trace round images
  • Create e-cards
  • Convert presentation to pdf format.

Video demonstrations of Spresent's features can be found here at YouTube

I can see me spending hours trying out Spresent and I will include some examples and instructions, if necessary, once I have had time to be creative with it.

Altruistic Link Love - Next Blogger takes up challenge

TripTracker Slideshow

Monday, April 09, 2007

puppy 1puppy 2

Full example at Introducing Amos

Until recently I almost exclusively used jalbum gallery software to create online photo galleries. This is a good free program with many different themes available and it is fine for creating galleries that do not need changing. If you add and insert images later you have to totally recreate the album and upload it again. As I often have to alter albums, I went searching for alternatives that would automatically include new images merely by adding them to an images folder.

I was looking for 'lightbox' type slideshow that would fit the bill. These 'pop-up' type slideshows are very popular at the moment. They are usually quick loading as the page does not have to be totally reloaded for each image.

My gripe with some of them is that you have to click on each thumbnail individually to trigger the larger image that pops up overlaying the page. Each image has to be closed before clicking on the next thumbnail. Those that do have navigation to access next and previous images are often not very intuitive. You have to know it may be there and hover over the image until the links appear.

I was delighted, therefore, to find TripTracker, which is a simple to use lightweight image viewer with more traditional type navigation and a nifty animated feature. It is easy to set up and alter(if you have some knowledge of html) and the instructions on the TripTracker site are easy to follow.

I have displayed a small example above but for a more complete view of its capabilities take a look at the Introducing Amos page I created - especially if you like cute puppy pictures - my daughter's new 'baby'.

Other lightbox type applications I discovered in my travels are listed below. (They use a variety of coding with such wonderful names as AJAX Prototype, Mootools, Scriptaculous and Ruby on Rails- for those who are interested in knowing such things). If you have a favorite, easy to implement gallery/slideshow or litebox solution please let me know.

Creating Image Links

Sunday, April 08, 2007

How to add an image link to your blog template:

You can see an example of what I mean by an image link on the right of this page -'the Sunshine on Fragile X Doris Buffet Challenge Image'.

An image link is an image that when clicked takes you to a web site - just like text links do.

Below is the HTML code used to make an image called 'autism_awareness.jpg linkable to the site www.autism-society.org:

Lets break this down:

Image coding:

<img src=
"http://www.sueblimely.com/blogger/images/autism_awareness.jpg">

This produces an with no linking - the image is
hosted on my own site at www.sueblimely.com\blogger:

The linking code:

<a href ="http://www.autism-society.org"></a>

This needs to be place around the image:

<a href ="http://www.autism-society.org">Your Image </a>

Putting it all together:

<a href="http://www.autism-society.org">
<img src="http://www.sueblimely.com/blogger/images/autism_awareness.jpg" /></a>

And here it is:
Autism Awareness

To add this to your sidebar in Blogger:

Old Blogger - edit your template and put the above code inside your sidebar.
New Blogger - add a new HTML/Javascript Page Element and place the above code inside it.

Altruistic Link Love Update

I have only had two kind souls who have taken me up on my challenge to display an image link on their blogs to their favorite cause/charity. I thought I should post a reminder:

I have some favorite causes/charities that I like to support. It occurred to me that it may be worthwhile giving some free advertising to them on this blog. It is so easy to do and potentially very worthwhile.

I challenge other blogs to do the same.

I will publish links to the first 20 blogs that contact me (via comments here) who show their altruism by creating an image link on their blogs to their favorite cause or causes. A permanent is preferred rather than just in a posting.

I have started the ball rolling here by adding a linked image to a major fundraising drive by the FRAXA Research Foundation who, if they can raise $500,000 in new donations by the end of October, will have another $500,000 donated by Doris Buffett's Sunshine Lady Foundation.

FRAXA's mission is to accelerate progress toward effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Fragile X, by directly funding the most promising research. FRAXA also supports families affected by Fragile X and raises awareness of this important but virtually unknown disease. Fragile X is the most common known inherited disability, affecting male and female, and the most common known cause of autism. It is caused by a 'fault' on the X chromosome, hence the name

I really think this important - please support me in this idea, publicize your favorite cause and get publicity for your own blog at the same time.

Blogtipping Day

Monday, April 02, 2007

Blogtipping day is a practice started by Easton Ellsworth of Business Blogwire: another sort of Link Love where you publish a blog post, on the first of each month, which gives one or more bloggers three compliments and one piece of blogging advice.

Blogtipping images have been kindly made available from the Business Blogwire website here.

Add a Google sound player

Here is a simple way to add a sound feature to your blog:

Example

play buttonA blogger tune? Can anyone tell me which film this is from?

How to include in a post or sidebar

Copy the code below and place it in the html of a post or in a the sidebar. (Classic blogger - add code to template sidebar. New Blogger - add it to a new "html/javascript" add page element)

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://googlepage.googlepages.com/player.js"></script>
<a href="http://replace-this-with-your-sound">
<img style="border:0; vertical-align:middle;" title="play-button" src="http://googlepage.googlepages.com/play.gif">
Replace this with the audio name</a>

80+ Tools for Successful Blogging

Sunday, April 01, 2007

My travels around MyBlogLog communities tonight led me to the makeuseof.com site which in turn led me to other useful sites. makeusof.com writes about new web applications that its authors think are useful or "at least entertaining" and they find plenty of them.

All of the blog is worth taking a look at but as far as bloggers are concerned this article is of particular interest: 80+ Tools for Successful Blogging.

Google Blog Bar Update - now searches a selected blog

Google AJAX Search API Blog: Blog Bar Update

The blog bar, displayed directly below the top menu on this page, has been set to search a number of keywords that I thought were relevant to the contents of this blog. This tool has been very popular and, based on feedback, Google have updated the bar so that you can program it to search only over a selected blog.

This would be useful if you wanted to display posts from your own blog.

E-Mail Icon Generator

One way to display your email address securely on your blog is to image rather than text. E-Mail Icon Generator is an online tool for creating such an image. Remember though that if you really want this to be secure do not attach a link to your email address to the image - if you do your address will still be readable from the page source code.

This particular tool creates icons for GMail, Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo!, AOL and many others. Example:
