Altruistic Link Love - Six Degrees

Friday, March 30, 2007

You've probably heard of the Six Degrees concept. Any one person (including me, Kevin Bacon) is connected to any other person through six or fewer relationships, because it's a small world.

www.SixDegrees.org is about using this idea to accomplish something good. It's social networking with a social conscience. Through this web site, you can learn about and support the charities of celebrities and your friends, as well as fundraise for the causes close to your heart.

I received this email today from Kevin Bacon (Ok it was a mass mail out to all members of 6 degrees but I thought it may catch your attention.)

Hi Sueblimely,

I’m Kevin Bacon and I’d like to introduce you to Six Degrees, a program which makes it easy for you to raise awareness and support for a charity that’s important to you. It is my hope that Six Degrees will soon be a force for good, by bringing a social conscience to social networking. I’d love you to be part of this important effort. Since its launch in late January, we've raised over $325,000. If you haven't participated already, I’d love you to be part of this important effort. If you have participated, I'd like to thank you for helping us get off to such a great start.

You may recognize some of my friends who have already joined me: Kyra Sedgwick, Jessica Simpson, Ashley Judd, Dana Delany, Jane Kaczmarek, Bradley Whitford, Kanye West, Rosie O'Donnell, and Nicole Kidman.

How can you join this powerful network? Take a few moments to make your own Six Degrees AIM Page. We’ve created a special template to make it simple and fast to get started. You can use your AIM Page to tell the world about your special cause, why it’s important to you and raise money for it with the help of the AIM for Good module. Our partnership with Network for Good, which happens to be my charity choice, helps to ensure that any online donations are safe and secure.

Over the years, ‘Six Degrees’ has come to mean that we’re all connected in this world. Through Six Degrees, we can tap the power of social networking to make a real difference for those in need. They are counting on us.

Make sure to check out my AIM Page to keep track of our progress and check out sixdegrees.org to learn more about the entire Six Degrees effort.

Thank you.

Altruistic Link Love

Thursday, March 29, 2007

I am pleased to announce that two altruistic bloggers have taken up my challenge to place image links to their favorite charities.

They are:

Kitty Art

Mike's Money Making Mission

Cornwall Air Ambulance

Many thanks to both of you. I am sure your chosen charities will appreciate it.

Add eBay ads to your blog using AuctionAds

I have avoided putting examples of ads on my blog so far as there are plenty of sites that talk about monetizing your blog. Being a real fan of eBay (I love any chance of a bargain) I am making an exception.

AuctionAds provide a way of tapping into the eBay affiliate program - by displaying eBay ads on your web site. You earn commission when links clicked from your site result in a Winning Bid, a Buy-it-Now purchase or a confirmed user registration. Ads are customized to your site content and are country specific - e.g. ads on my site will be from eBay Australia.

AuctionAds Reached 5,000 Publishers within the first week of launching. You can read more about it on the AuctionAds Blog.

Google AJAX Search Tools

Monday, March 26, 2007

Google has recently introduced some clever search tools that you can use on your blogs. All of these searches can be customised to your own choice of subjects.

I have created separate pages to show you examples of this coding in action: There you will find links to the google wizard pages that will help you create these.

Impressive effects with Ajax Labels for Blogger

Saturday, March 24, 2007

There are a few reasons why I am impressed by this 'peek-a-boo' style labeling display method. Firstly because of the idea and skill of the person who made it - Deepak of Blogger Hacked - and secondly because I managed to install it myself!! His instructions were very clear so the latter is not a marvellous feat.

As I have not yet transferred this template over to the new Blogger code I have installed this feature on my Sueblimely Practicing the New Blogger blog at Getting Labeled with Ajax/Prototype

On the 'Practicing' blog I am slowly (because I get sidetracked by such things as installing Ajax Labels) analyzing and trying to simply display the new features of the new Blogger; explaining them as I go.

Take a look for yourself and follow the links to the original page on Blogger Hacking.

A Challenge to Bloggers - A New Kind of Link Love

Thursday, March 22, 2007

I have some favorite causes/charities that I like to support. It occurred to me that it may be worthwhile giving some free advertising to them on this blog.

It is so easy to do and potentially very worthwhile.

I challenge other blogs, whose primary aim is not fundraising, to do the same.

I will publish links to the first 20 blogs that contact me (via comments here) who show their altruism by creating an image link(s) on their blogs to their favorite cause or causes.

I have started the ball rolling here by adding a linked image to a major fundraising drive by the FRAXA Research Foundation who, if they can raise $500,000 in new donations by the end of October, will have another $500,000 donated by Doris Buffett's Sunshine Lady Foundation.

FRAXA's mission is to accelerate progress toward effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Fragile X, by directly funding the most promising research. FRAXA also supports families affected by Fragile X and raises awareness of this important but virtually unknown disease.

Fragile X is the most common known inherited disability, affecting male and female, and the most common known cause of autism. It is caused by a 'fault' on the X chromosome, hence the name

FRAXA has contributed an untold amount of effort and millions of dollars towards fulfilling its goal. A great milestone has recently been achieved. Research they funded has now led to approval for the testing of a drug for treatment of Fragile X Syndrome!! Being a carrier of this disorder (as are 1 in 259 women), with an affected son, I applaud this incredible breakthrough.

I really think this important - please support me in this idea, publicize your favorite cause and get publicity for your own blog at the same time.

Blog About Money Online - Learn How To Make Money Online:

I won't quote the article verbatim but have referred you to the site for you to read it yourself. Just one of the community spirited type things that members of MyBlogLog do for each other from time to time!!

Of as much interest on the site was a little slide show of images which I had to go and investigate. Article on that coming up next.

AGLOCO

Although this is not directly related to making money by blogging, except for by adding a referral link to your blog, the animated comments on this post "AGLOCO Will Not Make Money Online! Ever!" had me intrigued enough to check it out and then to sign up to see for myself.

I don't believe that even though similar concepts have not been successful in the past others will automatically fail too. Among other things marketing, professionalism, perceived trustworthiness, the number of members and the type of members all have influence on the outcome.

So what is it all about?
Join up for free and:
  1. If you refer people to AGLOCO you get paid $0.20 for each person who registers.
  2. You install a viewbar in your browser and AGLOCO passes on money it earns from:
  • Searching - AGLOCO is paid by the search engine providers when you use the viewbar to do a search.
  • Referral fees earned from members visiting sites advertised in the The Viewbar™ These ads are targeted based upon the websites you’re visiting.
  • Earning commission for purchases made in relation to these referrals.
  • Being paid fees by software companies for downloading software.
  • Commissions from other service/product providers for recruiting customers from the AGLOCO community.
Who knows, it may just be possible for the community of members to make this a successful scheme and thus earn money from it. Apologies for adding my referral link to the links here - sheer greed. However any money I do earn from referrals from here I will donate to The Fragile X Research Foundation towards its Doris Buffett Challenge

Bumpzee

Saturday, March 17, 2007

I have had one of my web surfing nights - they tend to come in waves! I have joined up with a fair few sites - partly because you need to do that to see what they are all about.

After seeing some pages sporting a MyBlogLog like widget I clicked on one of them and discovered Bumpzee (I don't think it was created by a Daisy or Hans but I could be wrong?).

It is a social networking site with similar features to MyBlogLog. A major difference is that to join a community you must be approved. The advantage of this will be that although you may not be able to join a community you can browse them and know that the bloggers therein are knowledgeable about their subject and the subject matter is relevant to its community.

At present, apart from a general community that all join on registering, the communities are all based around affiliate marketing and SEO. Fellow bloggers may find the information of use for optimising their site, bringing in more readers and monetizing.

Even if you are not interested in this, the site is worth checking into from time to time as more community categories are going to be introduced.

The NextPost - Link Love

Being rather a romantic at heart, I kind of like the concept Link Love. Is it not better than the terms normally associated with linking - optimization, submission (although for some the latter can be enjoyable!), increasing page rank ....

Although I have seen the term on quite a few sites, I refer you to The Next Post Blog here as I enjoyed reading some of the posts there (that is not to say I did not like others but, having web ADD, I clicked on a link and got sidetracked before I could read others The NextPost:

Last year John Chow (not sure exactly when because I could not find the original post - he is a prolific blogger)
offered to link back to any sites that published a 200 word review of his site. I am unsure where the term 'Link Love'originated though. Perhaps someone could put me wise?

Geo Visitors

Friday, March 16, 2007

I am a real fan of Google Maps and Google Earth, often going on virtual travels around the world. Maybe it somehow scratches a life long travel itch in me? When I found the Geo Visitors tool I immediately decided to add it. Being just an link image it is unobtrusive and quick loading.

What it does:
Click on the image link which you install on your site and you are taken to the Geo-Visitors site. A google map shows icons for the locations of your site visitors for the last 24 hours.

How to do it:
Simply add the code from the Digital Point Studios site Geo Visitors page which creates this:

Geo Visitors Map

When added to your own site, your site statistics are shown of course - not mine!

Blog re-boot

Thursday, March 15, 2007

This blog has a totally different look today after I devoted my time to its redesign - something it has needed for a while. As I blogged about different blog tools, widgets, bookmarking and submission sites I would add the code to this blog as an example. The page had to increasingly run off to other sites to obey the java script commands embedded in it.

Consequently, its page loading no longer sped down the digital highway but barely made it out of the slip road. As a web designer I know how vital it is to have quick page loading!

I was impelled to finish off my redesign after reading and participating in a forum on the Bloggst site. Part of my contribution read:
An easy reading site for me is one that has well formed language and design, that is clear and easy to navigate. .......A slow loading page deters me from returning ...

Instead of hosting examples all of the various blog tools on this page I will be creating separate linked pages for them. Please bare with me while I get these up and running as well as smoothing out some of the rough edges on this page.

Bloggst - Advertise your blog for free.

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Bloggst, a new community/blog for Bloggers. Quote
"Here you will find useful information on all the many aspects of blogging, and you can also participate in our discussions over at the forums"

I joined up with Bloggst last week and have so far enjoyed reading the content and felt welcome enough to contribute too - which is a must for a 'community' of course.

Content to date includes:

Forum topics
* Community Central
  • General Chat
  • Feedback, Suggestions and Support
* Blogging
  • Develop and Maintain
  • Design and Code
  • Promote and Advertise
  • Monetize Your Blog

Article categories:
  • Just Starting Your Blog
  • Design and Manage your blog
  • Advertise Your Blog
  • Income and Profits
  • Interviews
The site uses vBulletin which has some interesting features - not the sort of run of the mill forum/bulletin board program that I am familiar with - I do tend to stick with open source though.

Take a look at Bloggst soon so that you can take advantage of the site's offer to feature your blog on their front page for free.

Is this why I am plugging the site you ask - yes it is partly to get my site featured but I think its subject matter complements what I am doing here and I will learn from it.
