New widget site - Fancy Gems

Bloggers tend to either love 'em or hate 'em but if you are in the first group here is a new site for you. Fancy Gems contains quite a few new unusual fun widgets such as a lava lamp, fancy text and banner generators.

Not really having use for more widgets I thought I would give one of the more frivolous items a go, The Secret Message Scratcher.

Riddle
What does man love more than life?
Fear more than death or mortal strife?
What do the poor have, what the rich require,
And what contented men desire?
What does the miser spend, the spendthrift save,
And all men carry to their graves?

Answer

Get Your Own Scratch

I detest widgets because they involve pre-programmed functions which I didn't order and which don't fit into my site plan. Good old html the classic way is the way to go.

The widget would have been much better if I had refreshed the page when creating it so that my riddle answer was displayed rather than the advertising message. The answer is there now.

It is fun kuanyin. It may come in useful for some things - eg a punchline to a joke or something you don't want people to read until they have read your whole article - as long as they can resist scratching.

When I came back to my blog today I felt the compulsion to scratch again, renny. Just as well I did or I would not have realized that my riddle answer was not appearing.

I don't mind widgets per se, sir james, as long as they work correctly and do not take too much time loading. I dislike the look of pages that sport too many of them and display only those I think really necessary. eg the social networking widgets that I use in the hope more people may discover and perhaps enjoy this blog

I would say html plus CSS is the best way to go although I am partial to ajax and mootools.

I've given you a "Nice" Award...you can collect it at my blog The Art Of Living and Dying is you want it.

Lava lamps are so 70's aren't they, although they did make a bit of a comeback - relaxing to watch.

Hi Sue,
Hey, great fun, I love that one lol....I'll become a scratchaholic :)

You have given me an idea Colin. I think I will create a section on my site dedicated to widgets - the fun and the funny ones. Just a list with a link to one widget so the page does not take forever to load. What do you think?

Contributions to my widget list are welcome.
